Following up on the design of a six-phase campus master plan provided in 2015 (see Master Plan), Smith Boland Architects was engaged by St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church to design Phase I. The first phase involved the transformation of the existing church building to something more steeped in tradition. The existing pre-engineered building with low slope roof is now hidden behind a new gothic revival inspired façade with flanking spire and bell tower, stained glass windows, and a heavy timber entrance canopy that leads into the expanded Narthex. The heavy timber canopy continues across the entry façade to become a covered entry and handicap accessible walkway that connects to a vehicular drop-off zone at the new Chapel.
Brief
• Transform the campus to create a traditional appearance
• Add new Chapel and meeting spaces
Results
• The new traditional façade doubled the size of the Narthex
• Administration area was enlarged and renovated
• A new 100 seat Chapel for daily mass and adoration was added
• Additional religious education classrooms added on the lower level
• A large meeting room with warming kitchen was added adjacent to the Chapel
• An elevator and open daylit stair provide handicap accessible circulation
